PREPARATION

I have talked to over twelve successful through-hikers and some unsuccessful ones.  I have discussed my plans extensively with Bill Irwin, representatives of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and some of the people who gathered GPS and GIS data.

I have tested data in Shenandoah National Park.  All critical data were within nineteen yards of where they needed to be.  The accuracy of my equipment has improved substantially since then.  I am aware that SNP is a very easy section of the Appalachian Trail and chose it as a location to test data for that reason.

I have backpacked around parts of the Cascades and Colorado.  I believe the above preparation gives me knowledge and experience to attempt this hike.

I walk up to five miles a day and work out four or five times per week.  I believe this will get me in good enough physical condition to begin this hike.

I have a solid support system in place to cover logistical matters, including resupplying and other issues best handled off-trail.  I have contacts with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, local trail maintaining organizations, and hope to meet through and other hikers along the trail.  Although the Minneapolis Star Tribune article linked to my website says I will hike the AT solo and unsupported, I would welcome the chance to meet people and the assistance normally provided through-hikers.  I am well aware that the next person to through-hike the AT unassisted will be the first person to do so.  Solo and unsupported was shorthand for my intention to hike without a full-time companion and full support crew.  Again, please visit my blog linked to this website for updates on my plans and preparation.
